Tips for Buying Children’s Furniture and Bedding
There are a number of factors that go into the mix of what kind of
furniture, bedding and room decorations to buy for children. Some of them are more tangible than others, but there are a few guidelines that we will consider in this article. Let’s give some thought first to what kind of baby furniture to buy. Let’s then look at how your purchases may vary depending on the number of children you have or plan to have, whether you have boys or girls, whether your children have any particular sensitivities and what interests your children might have.
First of all, when it comes to baby furniture, this is probably the time to purchase quality rather than inexpensive. I’m not saying that because I want you to spend more than less money, but rather for a good reason. Babies don’t generally tear up and destroy furniture, bedding, decorations and such. If you buy inexpensive, the likelihood is that your furniture will hold up for baby number one and maybe baby number two. If your plan is to have no more than two children, inexpensive may do for you. But if you plan to have more than two children, consider buying better quality at the beginning so you will not have to replace furniture you’ve purchased once already.
As a general rule, if you plan to have more than two children, consider purchasing better quality furniture. If you come from a larger family yourself, you know that things get handed down from older to younger. The same thing happens with furniture. As children get older, additional and different kinds of furniture become necessary. The older furniture that no longer fits the age of the older child will get passed down for the use of the younger children. You will want dresser drawers to work as well for the younger children as they did for the older ones. You will want surfaces to have stood up well to normal use so that the younger children can have the same aesthetic and practical benefit as the older ones did.
It probably doesn’t need saying, but boys generally are harder on things than are girls. Boys tend to play hard, rough and tumble, physical. Furniture sometimes substitutes for indoor jungle gyms for boys. That’s not necessarily behavior you would condone, but sometimes it just happens without warning. The rule of thumb for boys’ furniture is simple and sturdy. You can go with pretty and delicate for the girls in your house.
Some children have individual bedding needs due to their particular sensitivities to certain fabrics and textures. They may need more specialized bedding to accommodate for skin
sensitivities, perhaps requiring heavier thread count or softer fabric. Some children with allergies may need non-allergenic bedding, pillows and bath products. On a side note, some children develop rashes because of exposure to certain chemicals that may be found in common laundry soaps. In considering what type of bedding to purchase, simply keep in mind any particular sensitivity you may notice in your child.
Finally, we know that children are constantly learning from their environment. While a child’s bedroom should be a place of calm and restfulness, room decorations can be done in such a way as to both develop and encourage a child’s interests. From bed sheets that are imprinted with images of a child’s favorite TV character to wall decorations that stimulate curiosity about our world, a child will absorb information from simple decorating ideas you provide.
